Works on Paper: Richard Deutsch | Caio Fonseca | Regina Scully

Octavia Art Gallery | Houston

February 1 – 29, 2020

Opening reception: Thursday, February 6, 6 – 8 pm

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present Works on Paper: Richard Deutsch | Caio Fonseca | Regina Scully. The exhibition features a suite of graphite and ink on paper works by the sculptor Richard Deutsch, two gouache on paper works by Caio Fonseca, and two unique works as well as a special selection of pigment prints by Regina Scully. This is the first time that Scully will be exhibiting this exciting new suite of small edition prints.

Richard Deutsch is an American sculptor who works primarily in the Minimalist and Expressionist genres. Although his work ranges from small table-top pieces to multi-story sculptures, Deutsch "is well-known for his large-scale architectural and environmental projects. The recipient of numerous awards including fellowships from the American Academy in Rome and the National Endowment for the Arts, Deutsch’s work is marked by an ease of understanding space and environment. Among Richard Deutsch’s commissions for sculpture and art-integrated environments are significant projects for Stanford University, the Oakland Museum of California and major urban plazas for San Francisco, Oakland and Washington DC. His sculpture is in the permanent collection of San Francisco’s de Young Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.

Caio Fonseca is well known for his lyrical, abstract paintings that explore the interaction of form and tonality. His practice embraces early twentieth century modernism and the traditional principles of abstraction, however, he has established his own stylized vernacular through which to explore these concepts, often influenced by his training in classical music. Fonseca lives and works between New York City and Pietrasanta, Italy. He has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries and has had retrospectives at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM), Valencia, Spain. Fonseca's work is included in many public and private collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Whitney Museum of America Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Regina Scully received her BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from University of New Orleans. In 2017, Scully had a solo exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art entitled, Regina Scully/Japanese Landscape: Inner Journeys. Her works have been exhibited at C24 Gallery, New York; Octavia Art Gallery, New Orleans and Houston; Opera Gallery, Geneva; Prospect1.5, New Orleans; Prospect.2, Lafayette, among others. Her work is included in the Microsoft Art Collection, New Orleans Museum of Art, Capital One Art Collection, Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation Collection, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Since 2015, Scully has annually attended the Hermitage Artist Retreat Residency Program in Manasota Beach, Florida. She was a recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant Award in 2017.

We hope you can join us in celebrating this special selection of works on paper by Richard Deutsch, Caio Fonseca, and Regina Scully.
